The Student Loan Fiasco: Made in D. C.:

Dr. Robert P. Murphy

June 30, 2007:

Dr. Robert Murphy writes that the new Student Loan Sunshine Act will fail to address the true causes of corruption in higher education. Stronger proposals, such as to bypass the private lenders altogether and have all students get their loans directly from the federal government, would be disastrous. At root the problem is massive government subsidies and regulations, and more of the same will only make the situation worse.

Historical Analysis

Why Galileo Was Not a Coward:

G. Stolyarov II

June 30, 2007:

Although Galileo publicly recanted his heliocentric view of the universe during his trial, he did not do so out of cowardice. Mr. Stolyarov analyzes the genuine courage Galileo displayed in making the choice to live for his ideas rather than to die for them.

Humor

An Analysis of the Various Kinds of Humor: Puns and Humor Through Wordplay:

G. Stolyarov II

June 30, 2007:

Humor can be created by the placement of same-sounding or same-spelled words with different meanings in close proximity and/or in the same context, a technique often referred to as "punning." Mr. Stolyarov discusses how this kind of humor works and what it can accomplish.

An Analysis of the Various Kinds of Humor: Satire and Humor Through Absurdity:

G. Stolyarov II

June 30, 2007:

One of the most effective and constructive kinds of humor is obtained by reducing a real-world situation, person, or idea to its absurd logical extreme, or magnifying its flaws by making obviously absurd statements. Mr. Stolyarov writes that humor through absurdity is at the core of satire.

An Analysis of the Various Kinds of Humor: Humor Through Coincidence and Mutually Reinforcing Events:

G. Stolyarov II

June 30, 2007:

Mr. Stolyarov writes that when a given series of events happens to be aligned (or misaligned) in a highly unlikely manner, such a situation, a departure from the conventional or expected, may be a cause for humor.

Literary Analysis

Sophocles' Antigone and the Unalienable Rights of Man:

G. Stolyarov II

June 30, 2007:

What inner force drives Antigone to defy the tyrant Creon while others submit? Mr. Stolyarov writes that an absolute truth above subjective imposition was Antigone's guide, or at least her metaphysical judgment of it and the ethical obligations it would entail.

Politics

Universal Healthcare is What's Sicko:

Gen LaGreca

June 30, 2007:

To stop government despotism, we must repudiate the notion that healthcare is a right, writes Gen LaGreca. No one has a right to demand for free the goods and services produced by others. We have the freedom to take action to further our own lives—to work, earn money, and pay for the things we need—while respecting the same rights of others. We don't have any right to enact laws to seize people's money, control their activities, and force them to provide services on terms dictated by Big Brother. No good can result when the means used to achieve it are plunder and coercion. Universal healthcare merits the label "sicko"—or more accurately, "tyranny."

Stupid Human Tricks: The Case of the Spotted Owl:

Tom DeWeese

June 30, 2007:

Spotted owls, we were told a decade ago, were disappearing because big bad timber companies were cutting down "old growth" forests. So the environmental movement rushed to the forests, hugged the trees, and issued news releases to decry the evils of the logging industry. Save the owl. Save the trees. Kill the timber industry. Now, writes Tom DeWeese, it has been found that logging was not the primary cause of the spotted owl's endangerment, but the environmentalists do not care about such values as truth; they only care about their agenda of stopping industry and progress.

The Worst Tragedy of the Bush Presidency:

Dr. Chuck Baldwin

June 30, 2007:

Dr. Chuck Baldwin argues that the Bush II regime is worse than those of Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and even Bill Clinton. The only potential bright spot to his legacy might be a slight swing to the right to life by his two Supreme Court appointments. However, the verdict is still out on that. Take away Bush's Supreme Court picks, and there is nothing left but failure, frustration, fatigue, and futility.

Rights of Taxpayers are Missing Element in Stem Cell Debate:

Rep. Ron Paul, M. D.

June 30, 2007:

In Washington, the two camps in the battle over stem-cell research generally advocate very different policies. The first group wants a federal ban on all such research, while the latter group expects the research to be federally-subsidized. Neither side in this battle seems to consider the morality surrounding the rights of federal taxpayers. Rep. Ron Paul points out that the right approach to the stem cell issue is neither to ban nor to subsidize such research; this is simply not the province of the federal government at all.

"Which theory predicts the world around us more accurately? Is it the theory that states that all entities are material, or one that posits entities with zero mass, or with infinite density, or with zero volume? Is it the theory that recognizes only three spatial dimensions, or the one that posits eleven? Is it the theory that views force fields as mere convenient abstractions, or as an infinity of infinitely overlapping entities with infinite expanse? Let the reader try living life based on the theoretical underpinnings of post-Classical physics, and he will see how absurd and incompatible with the real world such theories are."
