Ludwig von Mises on Profit, Loss, the Entrepreneur, and Consumer Sovereignty:

G. Stolyarov II

May 12, 2007:

Mr. Stolyarov discusses the Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises's view on the consumer-driven nature of the market process and the role of the entrepreneur in it. Unlike much of neoclassical economic theory, which is confined to analyzing hypothetical equilibrium states, Mises's work focuses on how markets actually work in the real world and the crucial function played by entrepreneurs in them.

An Analysis of the Views of the German Historical School and the Austrian School on the Use of Theory and History in Economics:

G. Stolyarov II

May 12, 2007:

Mr. Stolyarov compares and contrasts the views taken on the role of theory and history in economic analysis by Wilhelm Roscher's older German Historical School, Gustav Schmoller's younger German Historical School, and Carl Menger's early Austrian School. Unlike the German Historical School, the Austrians saw the crucial importance of abstract economic theory as a means of interpreting and making sense of historical data.

William Stanley Jevons and Alfred Marshall on the Role of Marginal Utility in Economics:

G. Stolyarov II

May 12, 2007:

Mr. Stolyarov compares and contrasts William Stanley Jevons's view of marginal utility as driving everything in economics with Alfred Marshall's position that marginal utility only affects demand, whereas objective costs of production determine supply. Mr. Stolyarov then argues why Jevons's theory is superior to Marshall's.

An Overview of Soviet Economic Policies:

G. Stolyarov II

May 12, 2007:

Mr. Stolyarov describes the basic economic policies followed by the leadership of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) throughout its history-- a history of centralized power and stifling of private entrepreneurial activity.

Why the Soviet Economy Initially Grew and Ultimately Failed:

G. Stolyarov II

May 12, 2007:

The Soviet Union initially experienced high rates of economic growth, but then headed inexorably toward economic collapse. How did the Soviet economy manage to grow at first, and why did it ultimately fail? Mr. Stolyarov addresses these questions.

William Arthur Lewis's Two-Sector Economic Growth Model and Its Failure:

G. Stolyarov II

May 12, 2007:

The Lewis model encouraged Western nations to support less-developed countries with foreign aid in the middle of the 20th century. Yet this theory has been shown to be fatally flawed and has been largely discredited in the face of overwhelming empirical evidence. Mr. Stolyarov explains Lewis's theory and the flaws in it.

Historical Analysis

Property Rights Amidst Revolutions:

Joseph McCleary

May 9, 2007:

Joseph McCleary writes that the British Enlightenment philosophy recognized the individual as the possessor of all property and rights and resulted in a free people, whereas the Rousseau-inspired French Enlightenment, with the concept of a social body that engulfs the individual and his rights, resulted in the bloodbath of the French Revolution.

Politics

Living Off Food Stamps and Evading the True Welfare Issues:

G. Stolyarov II

May 9, 2007:

Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski is trying to look compassionate. He has decided to spend a week living entirely off of food stamps, with a budget of only $21 to procure groceries for all seven days. In this editorial, originally written for GrasstopsUSA.com, Mr. Stolyarov claims that instead of thoughtful analysis, the Oregon governor has engaged in mere sensationalist, populist propagandizing for a program that is incoherent and exacerbates the problems it was meant to solve.  Kulongoski’s gesture is mere political posturing; it does not constructively address the issue of government welfare or the fundamental criticisms of the welfare system.

Paul, Not Romney, Won First GOP Debate:

Dr. Chuck Baldwin

May 9, 2007:

Without question or reservation, Dr. Chuck Baldwin argues that Ron Paul was the clear and obvious winner of the first GOP debate, at least according to the more than eighty-four thousand respondents (at the time of this writing) who took the MSNBC online poll. Ron Paul is the only candidate on the Republican ticket who would seriously challenge the status quo of the neocons currently running our country into the ground. He has a voting record unlike anyone in Congress and is a true champion of liberty and limited government.

Unconstitutional Legislation Threatens Freedoms:

Rep. Ron Paul, M. D.

May 9, 2007:

Last week, the House of Representatives acted with disdain for the Constitution and individual liberty by passing HR 1592, a bill creating new federal programs to combat so-called “hate crimes.” Rep. Ron Paul argues that because federal hate crime laws criminalize thoughts, they are incompatible with a free society. They are also unconstitutional, violating the First and Tenth Amendments.

"A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World: he that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be little the better for anything else."

~ John Locke
