Culture

An Analysis of Richard Dawkins's Views on Cultural Evolution:

G. Stolyarov II

June 22, 2007:

The evolutionary biologist and philosopher Richard Dawkins argues that the colossal changes in human societies encountered in past centuries were not caused by extreme changes in human biology, but rather by cultural evolution. Mr. Stolyarov examines this view.

Economics

The Anti-Energy Congress:

Dr. William L. Anderson

June 22, 2007:

By discouraging the production and use of oil, Congress and its allies insist that they are doing us a favor. They believe that ethanol and other "green" energy futures are the way to go, yet the only way that we can pay for them is to pay more taxes to support the heavy subsidies these industries require. Thus, writes Dr. William L. Anderson, we are left with the prospect of Congress forcing us to use less fossil-based fuels (which are cost-effective and efficient) and replace those fuels with government-approved fuels, which are prohibitively expensive and inefficient.

Ethics

Capitalism: The Only Moral Social System:

Dr. Edward W. Younkins

June 22, 2007:

Dr. Edward Younkins writes that because the formation of a social system is an act of men, there is a moral imperative to create the kind of political and economic system that permits the greatest possibility for self-determination and moral agency. Capitalism is that system.

Introduction to Natural Law:

Dr. Murray N. Rothbard

June 22, 2007:

The believer in a rationally established natural law must face the hostility of two camps: the one group sensing in this position an antagonism toward religion; and the other group suspecting that God and mysticism are being slipped in by the back door. Dr. Murray Rothbard, however, demonstrates here the clear possibility of arriving at natural law through reason, without the invocation of religion.

Historical Analysis

The Ideas of America's Founders: The Compound Republic:

G. Stolyarov II

June 22, 2007:

The American form of government is not a democracy, but rather a compound republic, and the Founding Fathers made it one for good reasons. Mr. Stolyarov analyzes the purposes and structures of a compound republic.

What the Social Classes Owe to Each Other (1883):

William Graham Sumner

June 22, 2007:

What the Social Classes Owe to Each Other by William Graham Sumner was first published in 1883, and it asks a crucially important question: Does any class or interest group have the duty and burden of fighting the battles of life for any other class?

The Factory System of the Early Nineteenth Century (1925):

William Harold Hutt

June 22, 2007:

William Harold Hutt writes that there has been a general tendency to exaggerate the "evils" which characterized the factory system before the abandonment of laissez faire and that factory legislation was not essential to the ultimate disappearance of those "evils." Conditions which modern standards would condemn were then common to the community as a whole, and legislation not only brought with it other disadvantages, not readily apparent in the complex changes of the time, but also served to obscure and hamper more natural and desirable remedies.

Politics

Libertarians of Will, Intellect, and Action (1977):

Dr. Murray N. Rothbard

June 22, 2007:

The American revolutionaries set themselves a goal: to transform reality so as to bring the rhetoric of the Declaration into living practice. The American Revolution was the process of struggle by which the revolutionaries pursued their goal and achieved their victory. It is only because of their dedicated actions that we, their descendants, can celebrate the 4th of July and the Declaration of Independence. Dr. Murray Rothbard sees the American Founders as role models for today's libertarians in terms of their approach toward freedom and unyielding attempts to implement it in the real world.

Science

Explaining Human Dominance Through Evolution and Physiology:

G. Stolyarov II

June 22, 2007:

What biological characteristics enabled man to rise above the primitive subsistence of the animals and create culture, civilization, and progress? Mr. Stolyarov writes that evidence provided by comparing humans to other primates and humanoid ancestors provides part of the answer.

The Necessity of Independent Individual Judgment in Evaluating a Scientific Theory:

G. Stolyarov II

June 22, 2007:

What criteria ought we as individuals use when deciding whether to accept a scientific theory? Do we simply trust authority, or do we think for ourselves? This is a philosophical argument in favor of independent rational evaluation of scientific theories by each individual.

"The enemies of liberty have always based their arguments on the contention that order in human affairs requires that some should give orders and others obey."

~ Friedrich A. Hayek, The Constitution of Liberty
