Eating Food Will Kill You:

Alan Caruba

November 23, 2007:

Alan Caruba writes that what so many of the anti-meat studies do not tell you is that the subjects of their studies were, as often as not, also exposed to other risk factors that might have contributed to whatever form of cancer is being cited. The correlation between eating meat and the cancer risk cited is a statistical conclusion, but not necessarily the actual cause. Mr. Caruba makes the case for the commonsense approach toward eating meat -- that is, in moderation.

Spreading Freedom: What Works and What Fails:

G. Stolyarov II

November 23, 2007:

Mr. Stolyarov writes that those who doubt the United States’ ability to bring about freedom abroad are simply wrong – factually, empirically wrong. After all, the United States has an extensive historical record of instituting free or at least freer forms of government in countries that have formerly been under totalitarian or authoritarian control – countries that have hitherto had “warrior cultures” that resisted commerce and intellectual liberty while embracing subordination to rigid hierarchies of authority.

Creative Approaches to Fighting Abortion:

G. Stolyarov II

November 23, 2007:

It is a genuine travesty that abortion has been protected for 34 years by the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision. Those who oppose the practice of abortion and believe it to be murder are correct to seek to eventually overturn this ruling. However, what is to be done in the meantime? How can lives be saved and genuine tragedies prevented, even while abortion remains protected by law? What can the advocates of the right to life do to diminish the number of abortions without breaking the law? Mr. Stolyarov suggests a few approaches whose full potential has not yet been tapped.

Responsible Mining -- All Over the World:

Paul Driessen

November 23, 2007:

Today, all across the globe, countless proposed mining operations are attacked by well-financed social and environmental activists. They claim to represent ecological values, workers and families in areas that would be affected by the operations – and to oppose only facilities that would harm human health, traditional lifestyles, and pristine natural habitats. However, writes Paul Driessen, with few exceptions, their assertions are without merit. The activists’ actions actually harm the very people and environmental values they claim to be protecting.

Because She's a Woman:

Selwyn Duke

November 23, 2007:

Selwyn Duke fears that Hillary Clinton might become elected President simply for the reason that “because she’s a woman” is a powerful argument in an age where feminocracy is extolled.  And it just may be enough to possess us to make history.  It may give us our first affirmative-action president.

Can We Please Define "Racism"?:

Selwyn Duke

November 23, 2007:

James Watson, the geneticist who helped unravel the structure of DNA, came under fire for saying that Africans are not as intelligent as Westerners.  Aside from his remarks being deemed baseless and unscientific, he has quite predictably been labeled “racist.”  Why, some thought police even want him charged under Britain’s Orwellian “racial hatred laws” (Watson is conducting a speaking tour in Britain presently). In light of this tendency to apply the “R-word,” one that claims as victims late sportscaster Jimmy “the Greek” Snyder, manager of the Cincinnati Reds Dusty Baker, former baseball commissioner Al Campanis, late NFL player Reggie White and many others, Selwyn Duke has a question. What is “racism”?

Stereotyping 101:

Selwyn Duke

November 23, 2007:

Selwyn Duke writes that ironically, despite the fact that the diversity dogmatists would eschew stereotyping, a version of it imbues their ideology.  So it’s not that they don’t have biases relating to generalizations, only that their understanding of group differences is clumsy and primitive, sort of like Archie Bunker but with advanced degrees, the illusion of intellectualism and the inability to be honest with themselves and others.

Loons and Bears versus Eskimos and Oil:

Alan Caruba

November 23, 2007:

At a time when a $100 barrel of oil makes economies around the world quiver, the “conservationists” are more interested in a yellow-billed loon than in your ability to drive to work, pick up the kids at school, or just go anywhere in your car. Alan Caruba thanks environmentalists everywhere for being so obscenely oblivious to reality.

The High Cost of Climate Lies:

Alan Caruba

November 23, 2007:

An energy-rationing bill has been introduced to address “global warming.” The “Climate Security Act” would impose caps on how much carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions can be allowed and would institute an elaborate program to “trade” allowances among the industries and business affected. Americans better hope that some members of Congress will ask if there truly is a threat of global warming and why a similar program in Europe has proven to be a resounding failure. Alan Caruba writes that of you really wanted to undermine the nation’s economy, you could not devise a better way. It is the Kyoto Climate Change Protocol on steroids.

Kansas Rules Against Electricity:

Alan Caruba

November 23, 2007:

Alan Caruba wonders if the folks at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment think that electricity is made by fairies who live in the garden or that an army of elves produce it?  On October 19, a Washington Post article was headlined “Power Plant Rejected Over Carbon Dioxide for First Time.” Let’s hope it is the last time, or those of us around the nation who depend on coal to produce over 50% of the electricity we use are in big trouble.

"Formerly, when religion was strong and science weak, men mistook magic for medicine; now, when science is strong and religion weak, men mistake medicine for magic."

~ Thomas Szasz
