The Rational Argumentator's Fifth Anniversary Manifesto:

G. Stolyarov II

August 31, 2007:

For another outstanding year, The Rational Argumentator has spread the ideas of Reason, Rights, and Progress to ever more readers. Indeed, it seems to be an established trend that TRA’s cumulative visitation more than doubles every passing year. This manifesto celebrates TRA's accomplishments during its fifth year of existence and looks forward to further spreading of the ideas of Reason, Rights, and Progress.

Culture

Keep Young Kids at Home:

G. Stolyarov II

August 31, 2007:

Many parents today send their children to day care, preschool, kindergarten, and public school, thinking that these institutions will educate their children and form vital skills. Yet, if anything, attending these places of collective “learning” retards rather than stimulates education – especially in the youngest kids. To assure greater academic progress and, above all, greater happiness for children – particularly the brightest children – Mr. Stolyarov believes it is essential to educate them at home for as long a time as possible.

Economics

The Three Big Expenses: College Education:

G. Stolyarov II

August 31, 2007:

The reason why education, health care, and real estate are unaffordable to many Americans – and why involuntary financial suffering continues to exist in this country – is massive government intervention. Americans concerned about this genuine economic crisis would do well to examine each of these three categories and discover the tremendous damage government policies inflict on ordinary citizens’ finances and prospects. Here, Mr. Stolyarov considers the rising costs of college education, while costs of health care and real estate will be examined in subsequent essays.

High-Risk Credit:

Rep. Ron Paul, M.D

August 31, 2007:

As the dollar weakens, it becomes ever clearer that we need a return to sound, commodity-based money for a secure future.  Rep. Ron Paul reminds us that money based on real value, not empty promises and secretive backroom machinations, is the way to get out of the current calamity without causing even bigger problems.

Politics

America's Pastors: Preachers of Truth or Promoters of Tyranny?:

Dr. Chuck Baldwin

August 31, 2007:

In order to convince American citizens to surrender their firearms to the government during a time of martial law, the Department of Homeland Security is enlisting the assistance of America's pastors. According to the DHS, Dr. Chuck Baldwin's job as a church pastor, is to tell his congregation that, according to Romans 13, they must surrender their firearms when the government asks them to do so. Dr. Baldwin begs to differ.

Conservative Republicans Have Only One Choice in 2008:

Dr. Chuck Baldwin

August 31, 2007:

Dr. Chuck Baldwin writes that conservative Republicans have only one choice for President in 2008: Congressman Ron Paul of Texas. Unlike the GOP frontrunners, Paul is the real deal. No real conservative could support Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, John McCain, Fred Thompson, or Newt Gingrich. When it comes to historic conservative principles, each of these men is as phony as a three dollar bill. That they are now attempting to cast themselves as conservatives is more than laughable: it is downright hilarious.

No Time to Hang Our Heads:

Tom DeWeese

August 31, 2007:

Tom DeWeese thinks that despair is the greatest obstacle you and I face in the battle to truly restore the Republic. It's not the power elite, or the force of government or hidden conspiracies. It's our own attitude. There is in fact cause for optimism, as the advocates of freedom have won substantial victories against statism during 2007 alone.

Chaotic Reflections on the Nation's Capital:

Fred Reed

August 31, 2007:

After a recent visit to Washington, D. C., Fred Reed describes the atmosphere there as a a bureaucratized terror, coated with a sort of Madison Avenue inanity.

Homo-expect-us: Imposing Values on Christians:

Selwyn Duke

August 31, 2007:
Selwyn Duke writes that
one prejudice nowadays that characterizes those on the left involves a certain assumption.  It is the idea that anything they choose to remove from the closet must be accepted by all, and no objection to the disposition of the junk is to be respected.  In their philosophical chauvinism, however, a very important principle eludes them -- that of private property rights.

The Struggle for the Soul of the Democrat Party:

Alan Caruba

August 31, 2007:

Aside from a lack of any ideas other than those inherited from FDR and LBJ, the Democrats will continue to suffer from the general perception of cowardliness in the face of an enemy and endless bleating about the poor and disadvantaged. Alan Caruba writes that Democrats tend to ignore the way America has grown famous and wealthy from people who worked hard, took risks, and moved up the economic ladder. The other factor working against them is the way the population has leaned to the right ever since the days of Reagan and Goldwater.

Aging Infrastructure:

Rep. Ron Paul, M.D.

August 31, 2007:

Billions of tax dollars at all levels of government are devoted to infrastructure, but one problem is that politicians love to cut ribbons. Rep. Ron Paul argues that political capital is gained not from maintaining or repairing our systems, but from building new bridges, new stadiums, and new roads, often of questionable real utility. Seldom is there a ceremony or photo opportunity for repairing or maintaining something already in place. This is why government control over the infrastructure leads to tragedies like the recent Minnesota bridge collapse.
