The Inefficiency and Harms of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

G. Stolyarov II

June 17, 2007:

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), founded in 1970, exercises an extremely broad jurisdiction over American workers and their safety in the workplace. Its measures pertain, in theory, to every working person in the United States, with exceptions such as the self-employed, miners, transportation workers, and many public employees. Mr. Stolyarov demonstrates that OSHA contributes negligibly to worker safety while causing great economic inefficiency.

Who Owns Water? (1956):

Dr. Murray N. Rothbard

June 17, 2007:

Dr. Murray Rothbard argues that land, including water, mines, and the like — in an unused, primitive state is economically unowned and worthless and therefore should be legally unowned. It should be owned legally by that person who first makes use of it. This is a principle which we might call "first ownership to first user."

Economic Advantages of Price Discrimination:

Molinari Economic Institute

June 17, 2007:

European anti-trust authorities, acting under the pretext of preserving competition, have been moving against certain “dominant” companies’ trade practices and price concessions – judging them “discriminatory.” These practices include reduced prices, rebates, discounts, reduction coupons, and bonuses of various sorts. The existence of multiple prices may be perfectly justified from an economic standpoint, however, even if public authorities seek punishment by calling them “discriminatory.” This press release from the Molinari Economic Institute relates some of the benefits of price discrimination.

Ethics

A Refutation of Common Misconceptions about Cloning:

G. Stolyarov II

June 17, 2007:

Popular fears that cloning will lead to people making "copies of themselves," "clone armies," or clones bred for spare organs completely misconstrue what cloning is and what its results are. Mr. Stolyarov demolishes these widespread fallacies here.

Truths and Fallacies about the Future of Cloning:

G. Stolyarov II

June 17, 2007:

Mr. Stolyarov explores some of the fallacious predictions made about the future of human cloning, as well as actual possibilities for it and ethical arguments in its favor.

The Ethics of Boycotts:

Dr. Murray N. Rothbard

June 17, 2007:

A boycott is an attempt to persuade other people to have nothing to do with some particular person or firm — either socially or in agreeing not to purchase the firm's product. Morally a boycott may be used for absurd, reprehensible, laudatory, or neutral goals. It may be used, for example, to attempt to persuade people not to buy non-union grapes or not to buy union grapes. From Dr. Murray Rothbard's point of view, the important thing about the boycott is that it is purely voluntary, an act of attempted persuasion, and therefore that it is a perfectly legal and licit instrument of action.

Politics

An Individualist Opposition to the Forced Teaching of Creationism and Intelligent Design:

G. Stolyarov II

June 17, 2007:

Mr. Stolyarov  presents an individualist ethical and political perspective in opposition to demands that Creationism or Intelligent Design be taught in the public schools. While religious discussions ought to be permitted in the schools, they must not be imposed on anyone.

Islam: The Power of "No":

Alan Caruba

June 17, 2007:

Alan Caruba writes that slowly, ever so slowly, it is beginning to dawn on Americans that anything we attempt to do to entice the Middle East into the 21st century is likely to meet with defeat because its Muslim population, held in the grip of brutal men and a brutal theology, remains impervious to the possibility of peace, of freedom, of individual liberty.

Global Warming and Its Evil Twin "Climate Change": Predictions Wrong on Both Counts:

Tom DeWeese

June 17, 2007:

Global warming alarmists are a clever bunch. They have very carefully changed the issue from "global warming" to "climate change." Now any change in weather, be it mild winters or cool summers, can be attributed to "climate change." Whatever the weather, the news is very bad. So this year, if your region is experiencing unusually dry weather, perhaps a drought, or a cool spring, or a mild summer, Tom DeWeese advises that you rest assured it’s completely natural and has nothing to do with the wit or wisdom of Al Gore. He’s just trying to scare you into giving him another Oscar. Don’t be fooled. It’s not "climate change;" it’s just weather.

Amnesty Opponents are Not Un-American:

Rep. Ron Paul, M. D.

June 17, 2007:

Although the “reform” of immigration in the amnesty bill is enough to cause alarm, Rep. Ron Paul warns that other highly troubling provisions are tucked away that will serve to undermine our sovereignty and weaken our civil liberties.  According to the most recent version of the Senate bill, the misnamed Security and Prosperity Partnership for North America is to be “accelerated.”  It seems ironic that a project aiming to actually weaken US borders with Mexico and Canada would be added into a bill that purports to toughen border controls. Also, this bill will bring us closer to a national ID card, which without a doubt runs counter to American values and history and will punish American citizens without doing much to counter those who would come here illegally.

"He who espouses the institution of slavery never stops to reflect that he himself could be a slave. He who demands restrictions on the liberty of conscience demands it in regard to others, and not for himself. He who advocates an oligarchic form of government always includes himself in the oligarchy..."

~ Ludwig von Mises, Liberalism
