Liberty and Equality for Some: Same as Usual, but a Different "Some":

Fred Reed

January 11, 2007:

An industry exists today in the writing of pieces proclaiming the weakness of men and the superiority of women, a favorite word in the description of men being “fragile.” Fred Reed is weary of it. Women of course engage in this, as do some heterosexual men. Much is made, and should be, over the rising majority of women over men in the universities and some professions. What is this about? Mr. Reed believes that numerous institutions today-- at the behest and often the coercion of government-- unfairly slant the playing field in favor of women and minorities and to the disadvantage of qualified white male individuals.

Ethics

Morality Does Not Require Religion:

G. Stolyarov II

January 16, 2007:

Mr. Stolyarov argues that morality is not the exclusive domain of religion, and that it is possible for a moral person to be entirely non-religious. Furthermore, Mr. Stolyarov contends that morality is not confined to any particular ideology, but is rather entirely dependent on conduct, not thought. He wishes to show the existence of a general or universal set of moral standards which transcend any particular ideology or even lack thereof. This is at once a much lower set of standards than most people expect of any given ethical system and a much more important one; it is the moral baseline on which all civilization rests.

Historical Analysis

Praise for Lee and Jackson:

Dr. Chuck Baldwin

January 16, 2007:

While the strategies and circumstances of the War Between The States can (and will) be debated by professionals and laymen alike, Dr. Chuck Baldwin writes that one fact is undeniable: Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. Jackson were two of the finest Christian gentlemen this country has ever produced. Both their character and their conduct were beyond reproach. Instead of allowing a politically correct culture to sully the memory of Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. Jackson, all Americans should hold them in a place of highest honor and respect. Anything less is a disservice to history and a disgrace to the principles of truth and integrity.

Politics

President Bush Continues to Push America Toward a Police State:

Dr. Chuck Baldwin

January 11, 2007:

Dr. Chuck Baldwin writes that President George W. Bush's brand of conservatism is something completely foreign to traditional norms. He has outspent even the most liberal administrations. He has led the nation into undeclared foreign wars under false pretenses. He has bloated the size and scope of the federal government like no president since Franklin D. Roosevelt. He has increased federal funding for abortion providers at home and abroad. In addition, over the objections of a Republican-controlled Congress, Bush even supported the Clinton gun ban. However, it is President Bush's preoccupation with turning America into a total surveillance society that separates his administration from any and all others.

Social Security Totalization is a Bad Idea:

Rep. Ron Paul, M.D.

January 11, 2007:

Through a Freedom of Information Act Request, a private group recently obtained a copy of a 2004 agreement between the United States and Mexico that will allow hundreds of thousands of noncitizens to receive Social Security benefits.  The agreement creates a so-called “totalization” plan between the two nations. Totalization is nothing new. The first such agreements were made in the late 1970s between the United States and several foreign governments simply to make sure American citizens living abroad did not suffer from double taxation with respect to Social Security taxes.  From there, however, totalization agreements have become vehicles for noncitizens to become eligible for U.S. Social Security benefits.  The new agreement with Mexico would make an estimated 160,000 Mexican citizens eligible in the next five years. Rep. Ron Paul articulates the harms of the proposed social security totalization in this article.

Health Myths in France: More Competition, Not Cost Containment, is the Solution:

Molinari Economic Institute

January 11, 2007:

Since 1945-46, the French system of Social Security has been imposing a mandatory health insurance and thus has a captive clientele – as the insured are compelled to finance it. This system has been, and is still, justified in a great measure in the opinion of the general public on grounds that it allegedly leads the French people to become equal in health and provides financing of all the cares they might need. “Yet, more than sixty years after, we have to acknowledge that both justifications turn out to be myths”, declares Valentin Petkantchin, author of a new study on the subject. This press release from the Molinari Economic Institute explains.

The "Dumb" Party Acts as Predicted:

Tom DeWeese

January 11, 2007:

Tom DeWeese writes that Republicans could have been the majority party for 100 years if they had respected the Constitution and spent their time in power restoring the Republic. That's what the "electorate" really wants. Instead, they squandered what may well be the last chance for the liberty that brought us here in the first place. What a waste.

The Truth about Conspiracy Theories:

Tom DeWeese

January 11, 2007:

What is a conspiracy theory? There seems to be a lot of them, because every time Tom DeWeese writes about another government program or policy, the denials begin, as someone starts smirking "conspiracy theory" and calling him a fringe wacko. Mr. DeWeese demonstrates that the harms of public education, the United Nations, environmentalism, and the emerging surveillance powers of the government are not products of "conspiracy theories." They are real threats to the future of Americans and to liberty worldwide.

America Goes Insane Over the Weather:

Alan Caruba

January 16, 2007:

Instead of worrying about the specious claims of manmade global warming, Alan Caruba suggests that we need to save the Earth from the legions of fear mongers who are seeking to control our lives for the crime of having abundant food, longer life spans, technological and scientific advances, or that permits us to get on a jet and be anywhere in the world within hours. We take for granted that trucks, the heart’s blood of an economy, will deliver anything you purchase on Monday by the following Wednesday. Try to imagine our nation without cars.

H. R. 1 Puts America in a Giant Bird Cage:

Dr. Chuck Baldwin

January 16, 2007:

Dr. Chuck Baldwin remembers his father telling him, "A bird in a cage is safe, but it is not free." That proverb pretty much summarizes H.R. 1. When fully implemented, the new law will create a federal police leviathan that will place the American people into a giant bird cage. Under the pretense of protecting the country against terrorism, the new law will bring about unprecedented intrusions into the private lives of virtually all decent Americans.

"Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace."
