Reasons for Immigration
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”  ~Emma Larzarus

Common starting points: Germany, Ireland, Greece, Italy, Canada, Russia, Norway, France, and China.

* Reasons varied for immigrants who came from all over the world.
* Escape from persecution
* Escape from war or political troubles
* Crop failure. Ex: Ireland potato blight that led to famine.
* Land and job shortages, high taxes
* Poor health conditions in the slums of Europe
* Pursuit of economic opportunity nonexistent in their homelands. Ex: displaced small farmers and craftsmen in Europe sought new jobs and new beginnings abroad.
* Either the difficulties at home or the prospects in the U.S. were so immense as to compel immigrants to leave many belongings behind and expose themselves to an entirely different language and culture in the U.S.
* Some did not want to stay; they wished to make ample money and return to their homelands.
