	* By 1918 France would produce some 68,000 aircraft, 52,000 of which had been lost in battle. * British Handley-Page O/400 Planes: First efficient mass-produced bombers * Ace fighters (who shot down 5+ enemy planes) became prized on all sides. * Casualties were heavy in air combat, and pilot life expectancy was low, but air combat was still seen as a far more prestigious and desirable assignment than war in the trenches.
