signs a series of protection contracts with chieftains in the
hinterlands of Tanzania. |

1885: Chancellor Bismarck approves Dr. Peters' treaties, and Tanzania
is officially recognized as a German colony. Peters meets with Lord
Frederick Lugard to divide East Africa between Germany and Britain,
acquiring Rwanda and Burundi as a result. |

1889: Germany and Britain initiate a joint effort to eradicate the
slave trade in East Africa. Captain Hermann Wissmann leads a special
contingent, nicknamed "The Wissmann Troop," to suppress all practices
of the trade in human beings. |

1891: Chief Mkwawa of the Hehe seizes control of the ivory trade and
initiates forays into German territory. A convoy of German settlers and
soldiers is raided, and their commander killed. A bloody seven-year war
erupts. |

1893: Sisal agave, a plant used to manufacture rope and cordage, begins
to be extensively cultivated in Tanzania. It is termed "the white gold
of East Africa." |
