Merchant, ran through streets of San Francisco to inform people of gold discovery, sold pickaxes, pans, and shovels after purchasing supply at very low prices, became richest man in California, came to own much of downtown San Francisco and even printed his own currency. Made his fortune without ever digging for gold.
LEVI STRAUSS:
Ran prosperous dry good business during the Gold Rush, invented jeans (canvas pants) for miners in 1853.
PHILLIP ARMOUR:
Butcher who opened a meat market in Placerville, CA and initiated the Armour meat packing company.
JOHN STUDEBAKER:
Wheelbarrow and wagon manufacturer whose business obtained a start in California.
HENRY WELLS and WILLIAM FARGO:
Offered a stable, honest banking, transportation, and mail delivery system to miners, founded the Wells Fargo Company.
